DAVID SCOTT JONES, M.D.
Dr. Jones is a practicing family physician with interests in the interplay between the environment, the mind and biochemical aspects of the body which engender either health or disease in both children and adults. His area of acknowledged expertise is in nutrition, life style changes for optimal health as well as the daily professional functions consistent with the modern specialty of Family Practice. Dr. Jones has authored Healthy Changes, a patient-centered 16-week Workbook, which focuses on health living, healthy aging and risk reduction. This text has been used in his practice as well as other clinics in North America, Europe and Australia. After graduation from medical school (University of California, Davis School of Medicine, with honors) and completion of post-graduate training, Dr. Jones settled in Ashland, Oregon, a community at the southern end of the Rogue Valley near the Northern California border. In Ashland, he has been involved in Comprehensive Family Practice for twenty- five years. He has been active both in the clinical practice of medicine in the Rogue Valley, including being Chief of Staff at Ashland Community Hospital, as well as chairing and guiding the Southern Oregon Society of Preventive Medicine as acting President since 1977. Over the last two decades in his capacity as clinical consultant to HealthComm International in Gig Harbor, Washington, he has helped guide the development of Functional Medicine and the establishment of the Institute of Functional Medicine ( www.fxmed.com ). Since 1993 the Institute for Functional Medicine (IFM) has hosted seven International Symposia attended by more than 3000 doctors. IFM Symposia have had presentations by Nobel laureates in Medicine and those who are leading the development of a 21st century medicine that marries physiology, genetics, lifestyle, and environmental issues into an understanding of the origin and treatment of disease. Some of these keynote speakers have been Dr. James Fries of Stanford University Medical School, Dr. Kilmer McCully (author of The Homocysteine Revolution) of the Veterans Administration Hospital in Connecticut, and Dr. Ferid Murad of the Baylor School of Medicine (and recent winner of the Nobel Prize). The IFM has provided doctor education materials on functional medicine to more than 25,000 doctors in 34 countries and hosted four Applying Functional Medicine in Clinical Practice (AFMCP) training seminars that resulted in graduation of nearly 250 doctors from this eight-day intensive training program. David Jones, M.D. serves as President of IFM and the faculty is composed of world leaders in clinical medicine, research, and medical education drawn from medical schools, and research and clinical centers. The nonprofit Institute for Functional Medicine received accreditation for its doctor training programs in 1999 by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME). All IFM educational programs provide Category I continued medical education credits. In addition, IFM produces the Functional Medicine Update, a monthly subscription-based audio and digital journal. The Essentials of Functional Medicine, version 2.0 is also available on CD-Rom. In 1998, IFM began publication of a series of textbooks in support of its systemized educational program. These books are marketed both separately and in conjunction with IFM educational programs. The most recent examples include Clinical Nutrition: A Functional Approach and Nutritional Management of Inflammatory Disorders. IFM is in development of a companion text on cellular biology and biochemistry, and has recently published Detoxification: A Clinical Monograph. For the past five years, Dr. Jones has also been the President and/or Medical Director of PrimeCare, the largest physician managed IPA in Southern Oregon with 350 Providers. In that capacity he has been responsible for disease management projects focused on diabetes, congestive heart failure, asthma, low back management, depression, as well as other disease states. Dr. Jones is also President of PrimeHealth, LLC, a corporation that coordinates integration of the local hospital systems (Asante Health Systems and Ashland Community Hospital) with the PrimeCare provider organization. Maintaining the high standards of healthcare quality that patients have experienced and come to expect in the Rogue Valley within the relative new context of managed care is the mission of PrimeHealth. Dr. Jones has been blessed with three daughters. His older daughters, Dana and Ursula, are married and raising families while coordinating their own professional careers.
