LESLIE KATHLEEN PETERSON STONE, M.D.

Leslie Stone has practiced obstetrics, women’s health and family medicine for 16 years. She specializes in the area of women’s health and healthy childhood development.

Leslie’s training started in obstetrics and gynecology at Oregon Health Sciences University Medical Center in Portland, after graduation from University of Washington Medical School in Seattle. She was motivated by patients who encouraged her to focus on women’s health. Leslie feels there is an unspoken understanding between women with shared or similar experiences. However, she found that to focus only on aspects of women’s health and reproduction did not offer the fullest perspective on family health. She decided to pursue further specialty training in family medicine. This training allowed her to become involved in all aspects of women’s health, including a woman’s relationship with her family and childhood health and developmental issues. After completing the residency program in family medicine at Ventura Medical Center in California, she gained further expertise in evaluating complex gynecologic and obstetrical issues during a surgical-obstetrics fellowship.

At completion of her training, Leslie and her husband, Doctor Michael Stone, moved to a rural community. Leslie represented St. Maries, Idaho’s first exposure to a female doctor bringing a more rounded approach to women’s health. She immersed herself in the community, which included practicing full time, holding women’s discussion groups covering a wide range of topics, from treatment of menopause, and hormonal replacement to behavioral challenges in children and nutrition and weight loss. As a mother of four children, she also became involved in the schools. She chaired the school system’s guidance advisory committee, and helped organize parents’ involvement in the schools. Near the end of her eight years in St. Maries, The Gazette Record newspaper featured Leslie in a full page article on obstetrical deliveries in the community. (The article, LSarticle.pdf, is reproduced on this website.)

Leslie feels that her primary role in medicine is to help women enjoy, appreciate, and maximize every passage in life, from infancy through aging. Leslie has helped women of many nationalities and cultures deliver babies. Leslie states:

There is nothing more exciting to me in medicine than to see the excitement and expectation of the newly discovered pregnancy, followed by the wonderful transformation of gestation and the joy and glory of birth. I am always dumbstruck by the miracle of childbirth. With the first cry, Childbearer, transforms to Mother, Husband becomes Father, and the hidden primal, protective instincts of parenthood emerge It is such an honor to be invited into the most miraculous, pivotal event of life. From this I developed a deep relationship with the mothers, fathers, and their families I have delivered. Every one of the 1200 deliveries I have been involved in have been unique, and powerful. I look forward to being involved in many more.

Leslie is joining with David Jones, MD, and Michael Stone, MD, to provide comprehensive care to families. The emphasis in the Healthy Living & Healthy Aging Clinic is early recognition of health issues with early intervention to correct imbalances that can lead to chronic illness. This new way of thinking recognizes the complexities of health and disease in the individual, and provides the evidence-based scientific answers to patients’ health care needs. Integration of both the principles of family medicine and functional medicine provide a means to address patients’ needs on many levels. Precision in diagnosis using conventional assessment tools (e.g. physical exam, lab, x-ray) with lifestyle interventions (nutrition, exercise, emotional and psychological changes) integrate into a system of comprehensive family medical care.
